Taking Calcium Supplements

In every stage of life, calcium is an important building block that your body must have. There are times in your life that you will need extra calcium, such as during childhood, when bones and teeth are developing, as well as for the prevention of potentially deadly blood clots, when you are pregnant or nursing a baby, or when you get older and bones tend to get brittle and weaker, leading to osteoporosis.

If you aren’t currently taking a calcium supplement, you should talk to your doctor to see if it is a good move for you, and to find out the correct dosage you should take. If you do take calcium supplements, you need to always be certain you take them with food, either right before you sit down to eat, or directly after. You should always take your calcium supplement with a full glass of water, for maximum absorption with fewer side effects. You can also get calcium supplements in chewable form, and if that is what you choose to do, you need to be certain you completely chew the tablet before swallowing. If you can’t chew the supplements well you should let them completely dissolve in a full glass of juice or water, and then drink it. If you take other medicines, you should take them a couple of hours before taking your calcium supplement, as it may interfere with many other medications and their effectiveness.

There are some people who cannot take calcium supplements, due to other health conditions, or medications they have to take. People who have any kind of lung disease, stomach issues, or kidney stones should never take a calcium supplement. Since there are certain people who can’t take calcium supplements, you should first talk to your doctor, just to be on the safe side. You never want to play around with your health, not if you can help it. Pregnant women can benefit from calcium supplements, but again, you should only take them under the advice of your physician.

You need to be careful about the dosage of calcium supplements you take as well, as too much could be dangerous. People who have too much calcium in their system may suffer from unusual constipation, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, and changes in appetite. If you notice any of these problems, and you are taking calcium supplements, you should promptly talk to your doctor.

In the event you do have to call your doctor, be certain you advise him that you have been taking calcium supplements, the brand, and the usual dosage you take each day. They may also want to know what other medications you take, and the dosage on those as well. You can also expect to be quizzed regarding and history of diseases of severe illness, both of yourself, and close family members as well. They ask this information to determine the root of your problem, and to find out if you are someone who shouldn’t be taking calcium supplements at all, due to certain risk factors.

Taking calcium supplements is a great way to have strong healthy bones and teeth. You can purchase them on the internet, at your local health store, grocery store, pharmacy, or major discount store, whichever is most convenient for you. You may be able to get the best deal price-wise on the internet.
