What Zinc Supplements Can Do for You

Even the tiniest cell in your body needs zinc to function properly, which is one reason why it is such an important nutrient. Your body cannot manufacture its own zinc, so it has to get the zinc it needs solely from the food you eat, or the supplements that you take. There are many functions and benefits that zinc provides your body with. Zinc is crucial to the proper functioning of the immune system, supports and protects joints, restores vital tissues, and promotes the growth of healthy cells. Currently, zinc is used to help improve sex drive and sexual ability, help you have beautiful, strong hair, and promotes healing, especially from an injury to the skin, such as cut or surgical incision.

Zinc also plays a major role in your sensory perception, enabling your sense of taste, sight, and smell. Some people have regained partial vision when taking zinc supplements to combat damage caused by macular degeneration. If you don’t have enough zinc in your body, you will notice that your food just doesn’t taste quite right, and that you can’t smell as well, even odors that would be offensive to someone else.

When taking a zinc supplement, you need to talk to your doctor to find out exactly what the proper dosage should be, so that you don’t get too much zinc on your system, which can actually lead to damage to the immune system, the opposite of what you want. Your doctor may advise you not to take a zinc supplement, if your levels are good, or you don’t have any problems.

One thing to keep in mind if your doctor does approve your taking zinc supplements is that zinc can interfere with your body’s ability to absorb copper, another essential nutrient. Due to that fact, many doctors suggest if you take a zinc supplement, that you also take a copper supplement as well, so you don’t do more harm than good. Even if you take a zinc supplement, you still need to eat a well balanced, nutritious diet, so that you can maintain a healthy weight, and get the other nutrients you need.

When purchasing your zinc supplement, you should read the label to be certain the supplement has the GMP symbol. Supplements are not yet regulated by the government, and the GMP symbol lets you know that the supplement should be safe to take, containing no dangerous additives, and that they dosage is as it should be.

There are many places that sell supplements, and if you shop around, you can find them at fairly decent prices, so you don’t have to break into your piggy bank. As always, you can shop online and occasionally find better deals, again make sure that you are shopping from a reputable merchant, and that the supplements have the GMP symbol.
